Teen Glass Summer Camp 2024 (Flameworking & Beadmaking)

Join the Rochester Arc + Flame Center this summer for our Glass Flameworking Teen Summer Camp! Held in our spacious, well-equipped, and climate-controlled studio, classes meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays for 2 weeks. Students have the option of attending our MORNING SESSION from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM or our AFTERNOON SESSION from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. No experience is necessary, and all safety equipment, tools, and materials are included in the tuition.

Open to students ages 15 - 19, this hands-on course will give students an opportunity to work with two different types of glass, soft and borosilicate. Led by our experienced and dedicated faculty, students will use a variety of specialized tools to heat and shape molten glass utilizing gravity and hand movements. The fundamentals of flameworking will be taught including how to light a torch, adjust a flame,
stretch, gather, cut, & fuse glass rods into beautiful designs.

The first week will focus on working with Italian soft glass. Students will learn how to make an assortment of beads in various shapes and sizes. Using dots, frits, and simple encasements, students can choose from a wide variety of colors to apply different textures.

During the second week, students will work with borosilicate glass and experience the differences between these two glass types. Using many of the
same techniques from the previous week, students will make a variety of colorful pendants that can include a teardrop, leaf, and heart.

Students will have free time during each class to practice their newly learned techniques and explore their creativity. Class projects will be annealed in a kiln and students will be able to take their projects with them the following day.

NOTE: Each camp is limited to 8 seats and a minimum of 3 students is required to run.
